Review: Quality Snacks

Title: Quality Snacks
Author: Andy Mozina
Synopsis: Driven by strange ambitions, bungled love, and a taste for – or abject fear of – physical danger, the characters in this collection enact the paradox in the concept of a quality snack: the dream of transmuting the mundane into something extraordinary. Andy Mozina depicts high-stakes performances to gratify both deep and superficial needs: A man experiencing a career crisis watches a 74-year-old great grandmother perform aerial acrobatics at the top of a swaying 110-foot pole. A troubled young man tries to end his father’s verbal harassment by successfully hunting a polar bear. Desperate to find a full-time job, a pizza deliveryman is fooled into a humiliating sexual demonstration by a couple at a Midway Motor Lodge. And in the title story, a flavor engineer at Frito-Lay tries to win his boss’s heart with his strategy to reposition Doritos from snack food to main course.

Review:
Quality Snacks is a collection of apparently random short stories that as a unit make an amazing creative world.

The narration is detailed and well taken care of. It took me some time to get into the narrative rhythm because I am not used to reading short stories. Though after I read the first 5 I really get into the story.

One of the things I liked the most were the surprises that where behind each short story. It brought suspense into the narrative. My favourite short story was Pelvis, it get stuck in my head even after I finished the book. I also enjoyed the Santa one, I was thrilled for reading an elf civil war. It was refreshing and funny.

Quality Snacks is the perfect mix of humor, fun and inner reflexions. A very suitable reading for fiction lovers!

The Author
Kirsty Moseley My name is Kirsty. I was born in Hertfordshire, England. In 2000 I moved to Norfolk, it was there that I met my husband, Lee. Now, what can I say about Lee, apart from everyone should have one? He's my biggest supporter, and I wouldn't be where I am today without his encouragement and endless support. He is my inspiration behind most of my male leads, I always try to bring a little of him in somewhere, be it his kindness, selflessness, or just his ability to make me feel treasured. In 2005, I was gifted with the birth of my son. He is, and always will be, the best thing I have ever done in my life. As you can probably tell, I'm a very proud mummy. I have always been interested in writing, but after the birth of my son I accidentally came across an amateur writing site. After a couple of months of just reading on there, I finally plucked up the courage and posted one of my stories. I was shocked and overwhelmed by the support of readers on there and they gave me the confidence to get where I am today. In April 2012, I self-published my first novel ‘The Boy Who Sneaks in my Bedroom Window’. And in October 2012 I took the plunge again, publishing my second novel, 'Always You.' Lastly, if I had to sum myself up in one word, it would probably be ‘daydreamer’ – but unlike most of my school teachers, I don’t necessarily view that as a bad thing. After all, I read somewhere once that books are like waking dreams….

Cover reveal: Ripped by Katy Evans

RIPPED (Real #5)

Every woman wants me--except the one I sing for.

Seattle shakes with anticipation: they call it the concert of the year. They say girls are getting pregnant just thinking about Crack Bikini being in town.

But when you love a girl, you don't leave her with nothing but a ring and a promise.

Any man with half a brain should know..

So what did I expect my girl would do when she saw me again?

Well, for starters, she loathes our music. Particularly the song I wrote about her.

When I sing it, the stadium is in an uproar. Thousands of fans scream my name like

I'm a god--but yeah, not her. Crystal clear: the girl's not happy to see me.

Black hair, black boots, a bad attitude, that's her -- Pandora Stone is a freaking man-eater and she's out for my blood.

That's alright.

Let her come at me. Because I'm out for her heart and, this time, there's no way she can stop me.

Waiting On Wednesday (43)

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we´re eagerly anticipating.

The book that I am waiting is :

Title:Better When He´s Bad (Welcome to the Point #1)
Author: Jay Crownover
Release Date: June 17th 2014
Publisher: William Morrow
Synopsis: Welcome to the Point

There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter.

Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way.

Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.

Bax terrifies her, but it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize that some boys are just better when they’re bad.

-I am a huge fan of the Marked Men series and of Crownover´s style. I can´t wait to have this bad boy in my hands. I have already pre-ordered it and I am hoping it will arrive before I have to go to the Edinburgh signing so I can get my copy signed by Jay!!!

Top Ten Bookish Things (that aren't books) I would like to own

1. Bookshelf with a scale: yes, like the one in Beauty and the Beast (L)

 2. Kindle. I love paper books and I don’t think I will switch to electronic anytime soon, but I’ll admit that sometimes the idea of getting one for the convenience of it is tempting.

3. Nice bookmark. I always end up using some bus ticket or leaflet as a bookmark for fear of missing the cute ones I have but…

4. Personal library. Lifetime dream, a room only for books at my own house.

5. Ok, not sure what this is… but looks super useful to be able to read using just one hand and eat or drink with the other! xD

6. Book pendant. I have a Harry Potter one but I want more! They are just BEAUTIFUL.

7. A hollow book to keep things inside.

8. A bookend like this…

9.     THIS bookshelf!

10. Or this one!

James Moriarty

New BBM! Alright, we are starting a new week but I’m sorry to say I’m still fangirling about Sherlock… and as much as I love the main character of the show (of whom I already talked some weeks ago) today we have THE bad boy in the series, the nemesis: Moriarty (Andrew Scott).

He is the ultimate bad boy, and I don’t mean the kind of hot rebel guy that you can think of if I say bad boy, I mean bad as in evil. He is basically insane but extremely intelligent. If Sherlock is a high-functioning sociopath, Moriarty (this Moriarty) is an actual psychopath. And they have created the character in such a way that it can get really scary sometimes and crack you up the next moment. He is unpredictable. All the time. That is where the greatness of the character resides, it is just impossible to overlook someone like that and you end up loving him, loving how much you hate him.

He is Sherlock’s main nemesis but it is not exactly that he despises him; he just needs someone clever enough to follow his (sick) games. They are like the two sides of a coin: both are brilliant but each uses their brains for one or the other side.

What I really enjoy about this character is that with bad guys in fiction sometimes it is fairly obvious that the ‘hero’ is always going to end up the victor of the two; however with Moriarty, as it is depicted in this adaptation, you never get to know if Sherlock is going to be able to get him. Because he definitely is a criminal mastermind like no other.

He is one of the best secondary characters I have seen for a while and the actor Andrew Scott portrays him perfectly; he undoubtedly does an amazing job.

"You need me, or you're nothing. Because we're just alike, you and I. Except you're boring. You're on the side of the angels."

Lost in Us Blog Tour: Review + Giveaway

Title: Lost in Us
Author: Layla Hagen
Synopsis: Serena has learned to live with her past, locking her secrets and nightmares deep inside her. But when her boyfriend of six years abruptly leaves her, she’s catapulted back into pain, nursing a broken heart. When indulging in mountains of chocolate doesn’t work, Serena decides the best way to deal with her shattered heart is to indulge in something else. A rebound . . . The night she swaps her usual Sprite for tequila, she meets James. The encounter is breathtaking. Electrifying. And best not repeated. James is a successful entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. A man who has amassed a fortune by taking risks. A man who has shunned commitment completely, and still does. He’s the exact opposite of Serena. But sometimes opposites attract. Sometimes they give in to burning passion. Sometimes opposites are perfect for each other. James is everything her damaged soul could want. His kisses are intoxicating, his touch out of this world. He makes her forget. He grants her peace from her pain. But as they grow closer, Serena discovers she isn’t the only one with a past. James carries the scars of a past much darker than hers. One that has left him damaged, hurt, and wary of love. A past that gives him the power to shatter her. Now James and Serena must find a way to mend one another. Or risk losing each other forever.

My review:
Lost in Us is an easy read full of emotional rollercoasters. The narrative is refreshing though from my point of view everything happens too fast. I am not used to reading books where the main characters hook up and connect so instantly. I liked Serena, she was a strong heroine but at the same time she has the typical flaws of girls when we have a crush

I didn't like James a lot, lately I've been realizing that I am not a huge fan of wealthy characters. I find them presumptuos and annoying. Though James had some redeeming qualities.

Lost in Us is full of smockingly Hot scenes and angsty flights that will be highly by romance readers.

My name is Layla Hagen and I am a New Adult Contemporary Romance author.

I fell in love with books when I was nine years old, and my love affair with stories continues even now, many years later.

I write romantic stories and can’t wait to share them with the world.

And I drink coffee. Lots of it, in case the photo didn’t make it obvious enough
